A talented array of local high school cross-country teams are currently trailblazing their way to glory.

Here’s a look at just some of the girls teams in the running this fall.

 

ACADEMY OF NOTRE DAME

League: Commonwealth Conference

Last year’s record: 5-1

Returning Starters: Natalie Foy, jr.

Promising Newcomers: Lily Beland, 6th; Ruth Ann Ambrose , fr.; Sean Raju, fr.;

Coach Manny Cruz (3rd season): “This year we are filled with a ton of young promising runners. We are looking to defend our lower league title on the girls side and continue to improve our young team.”

 

ALVIRNE

League: New Hampshire Division I

Returning Letterwinner: Brynna Anderson., soph.

Promising Newcomers: Annabelle Simpson, fr., Jennifer Herbert, fr.; Grace Wherry, fr.; Gwen Grondin, sr.

Coach Colleen Currier (4th season): “Overall, we are a very young team, but we do have some great senior leadership. We are looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season.”

 

BILLERICA

League: Merrimack Valley Conference

Last Year’s Record: 4-2

Returning Letterwinners: Emily Burdick, jr., Deirdre Bailat, jr.; Sam Panzeri, soph.; Alyssa Scuccimarra, jr.; Alisha Khalifa, sr.; Lily Freeman, soph.

Newcomers: Keira Hutchins, 8th; Alexia Delaney-Cahill, 8th; Kendall Loguidice, 8th; Lily Canney, 8th; Madelyn Cormier, 8th; Maeve O’Brien, 8th; Emma Philippon, 8th; Minick Cooper, fr.; Jillian Darris-O’Connor, jr.

Coach Cullen Hagan (19th season): “We have a very small team compared to most years, with few upperclassmen and a lot of new athletes. There will be a lot of learning and development this season, and we look to improve each week to be at our best for the championship meets.”

 

CHELMSFORD

League: Merrimack Valley Conference

Returning Letterwinners: Amelia Kelley, jr.; Sarah Poor, sr.; Abby Bailey, jr.; Jillian Walker, soph.

Coach Karen Blagg (5th season): “The team has been working hard and making lots of progress. I am excited for the girls to compete this year as some of our younger talent will be more experienced.”

 

DRACUT

League: Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2

Last Year’s Record: 0-6

Promising Newcomers: Soleina McDowell, sr.; Shaelyn McDowell, jr.; Gabriela Faria, fr.; Maggie Callahan, 8th; Abby Stebbins, 7th;

Coach Erik Taber (10th season): “”The coaching staff is very happy with the direction the girls program is heading. We have more runners this year than is years’ past. This has brought the energy and enthusiasm to the first couple weeks. I’m very excited to see the progress we make as the season goes on.”

 

GREATER LOWELL

League: Commonwealth Athletic Conference

Promising Newcomers: Alexa Palladino, fr.

Coach Matthew Murphy (3rd season): “(We hope to be) contenders for the conference title.”

 

GROTON-DUNSTABLE

League: Mid-Wach

Coach Chris Volante (2nd season): “The girls look to build off their Pod Championship last fall with a lot of depth The goal is to win the League Championship and be highly competitive in Central MA and state meets.”

 

LITTLETON

League: Mid-Wach C

Coach Casey Kaldenberg (3rd season): “Looking forward to a great season with some seasoned veterans and promising newcomers to the sport.”

Coach Marybeth McKenney-Finn (24th season): “Have a small core of returners along with many newcomers. It’s a long season, so we take one meet at a time. Our goal has always been to stay healthy and strong to compete well at the post season championships meets.”

 

PELHAM

League: New Hampshire Division 2

Coach Steve Charbonneau (8th year): “(Our goals are to) continue to improve last year’s new runners and incorporate new people to the team.”

 

SHAWSHEEN TECH

League: Commonwealth Athletic Conference

Coach Pat Kelly (7th season): “We have a strong group of returning runners to lead the team. In addition, we have a group of promising new runners that we anticipate will be a great supporting role.”

 

TEWKSBURY

League: Merrimack Valley Conference

Returning Letterwinners: Maci Chapman, sr.; Molly Cremin, sr.; Olivia Millspaugh, jr.; Elyse O’Leary, sr.; Cassidy Paige, soph.; Tierney Trant, sr.; Maisan Nguyen, sr.; Victoria Allen, sr.; Eric Hinkle, sr.

Promising Newcomers: Alexis Rooney, soph.; Grace Carroll, jr.; Dephnie Alcide, soph.; Skye Tambi, soph.; Riley Stevenson, 8th; Maria Lightfoot, 8th.

Coach Fran Cusick (7th season): “We graduated a great senior class last spring. For this season, Maci Chapman and Molly Cremin had a great summer of training and should be our 1-2 runners. Behind them, Elyse O’Leary and Olivia Millspaugh should be next up. The rest of the top 7 is up in the air at the moment, but will likely include some combination of Cassidy Paige, Tierney Trant, and Maisan Nguyen. Our team has been gelling well over the first two weeks of practice and we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”

 

TYNGSBORO

League: Midland Wachusett League

Last Year’s Record: 3-3

Returning Letterwinners: Emma Duarte, sr.; Emma Hartigan, sr.; Brylee Betty, fr.; Audrey Mahon, fr.; Isabella Duarte, 8th; Emery Gramer, 8th.

Coach Keith O’Brien (20th season): “We are hopeful for a successful 2021 cross country season.”

 

WESTFORD ACADEMY

League: Dual County League

Last Year’s Record: 3-2

Coach Phil Archambault (3rd season): “We are a young team with many athletes new to cross-country and I am looking forward to seeing these young ladies improve and compete alongside our veteran leadership.”

 

WILMINGTON

League: Middlesex League Freedom Division

Last Year’s Record: 2-1

Returning Letterwinners: Olivia Erler, sr.; Angie Zaykovskaya, sr.; Hannah Bryson, soph.; Addyson Hunt, fr.

Promising Newcomers: Shea Cushing, sr.

Coach Brian Schell (7th season): “We have a strong top four who are looking to make an impact on the league and at states. We need a fifth scorer to step up.”
