Tracy Martin cruises to 5-shot win Women’s Lowell City Tournament
Vesper Country Club’s Tracy Martin posted a sparkling round of 3-under 68 to capture the Women’s Lowell City Golf Tournament on Saturday at Nabnasset Lake Country Club.
The Tyngsboro native and former Bishop Guertin standout Martin cruised to a five-shot victory.
Mount Pleasant’s Morgan Smith, who will be a senior at Westford Academy, finished second with a 2-over round of 73, followed by her younger sister, Molly, with a 3-over round of 74.
After an even-par 35 on the front nine, Martin caught fire on the back. She made four birdies and just one bogey for a 33 to close it out.
Last summer, Martin had a day to remember at Vesper Country Club. She fired a 62 to set a new women’s course record from the red tees at Vesper. The round included a hole-in-one on the 153-yard par-3 17th and an eagle on the 293-yard par-4 13th.
On Saturday, she overpowered the rest of The Cities field.
Martin played her college golf at the University of Richmond. She ended her career in 2013 with the second-best scoring average (78.44) in program history.
Long Meadow’s Caitlin Barry, a five-time champ, finished fourth with a 4-over 75. Nabnasset’s Sophia Flabouris was fifth (78), followed by Long Meadow’s Madison Smith (80) and Vesper’s Liz O’Brien (80) in a tie for sixth.
Molly Smith won last year’s championship, while her sisters Morgan and Madison took second and third, respectively. Saturday marked yet another top-10 finish for all three sisters.
Vesper’s Colleen Kaiser and Jessica Hughes and Nabnasset’s Anne Windhol all shot an 83 to round out the top-10.
Vesper won the team title with a total score of 883. Nabnasset (909) was second, followed by Long Meadow (933) and Mount Pleasant (952).
A total of 48 golfers from the four courses played in the one-round tournament.
