Sean Deveney is a veteran sports reporter covering the NBA, NFL and MLB for Heavy.com.
Deveney, who has written for Heavy since 2019, has more than two decades of experience covering the NBA, including 17 years as the lead NBA reporter for the Sporting News. His tenure at the Sporting News also included three years as an editor and general assignment reporter.
Deveney has covered the NBA Finals, the World Series, the Super Bowl and two Summer Olympics, in London (2012) and Rio (2016). His in-depth feature story on then-Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez was named Honorable Mention in the annual book, Best American Sports Writing, and his book, “Before Wrigley Became Wrigley,” was a finalist for SABR’s Lawrence Ritter award.
He is the author of eight nonfiction books, including “Fun City,” which was written up in the New York Times, as well as “Facing Michael Jordan,” “Remembering Kobe Bryant,” “The History of the NBA in 12 Games,” and, “The Original Curse,” which was featured in an ESPN Outside the Lines segment on sports gambling.
Education
Sean Deveney has a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, where he graduated in 1997.
In that time, he was a flanker for the rugby team, interned for the Chicago White Sox, and worked for Northwestern’s Sports Information Department, which yielded memorable run-ins with Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight and Boston College football coach Tom Coughlin. He also lived in Dublin, Ireland, for a year.
