Claire Sygiel Obituary (2019) – Ware, MA – The Republican

Claire A. (Romanczyk) Sygiel, 97, a longtime resident of Ware, died peacefully Friday at her home.
A firm believer in education, Claire earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Massachusetts while in her forties, and then taught math, mostly geometry, at Palmer High School for 25 years before retiring in 1991. She was born in Holyoke, but lived in Bondsville and South Belchertown before moving to Ware in 1954.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Ware and served as president of its Ladies Guild for 25 years.
Claire loved old black and white movies, hot dogs, Clark Gable, the Red Sox (especially “Teddy” Williams) and playing bingo at Foxwoods casino and various church halls.
She was very proud of her Polish heritage, enjoyed cooking Polish food and visited Poland many times.
Claire had a beautiful voice and was often asked to sing at weddings and funerals. She loved Ave Maria and the music of Broadway shows, especially Camelot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Sygiel; her parents Agnes and Wasyl Romanczyk; and siblings Agnes Kowal, Joseph Romanik, Ben Romanik, and Floyd Romanik.
She is survived by her children Chester Sygiel (Virginia Meagher), Jackson, Ky.; Carl Sygiel (Lynn), Indianapolis; Claire Sygiel (Cliff Kerr), Ware; and Carolyn Sygiel, Dorchester; grandchild Julie Sygiel, New York; several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Ware, with visitation in the church beginning at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jackson City School Chess Club, 940 Highland Ave, Jackson, Ky. 41339.
