CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for western Massachusetts Monday.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening for the increased risk of brush fire activity. The West Springfield Fire Department said dry weather and windy conditions could allow fires to spread quickly if they start.

West Springfield Fire Lt. Anthony Spear says if you are going to be doing outdoor activities that involve flames, anything heat related and yard work, it’s important to be aware of the weather conditions.

“If the grounds dry, work in an area where your not near vegetation. If you choose to smoke, you’re going to be outside smoking… make sure you dispose of those smoke materials properly, making sure they are all the way out every time,” said Lt. Spear.

Lt. Spear says that now is not a good time to be burning in your yard. He recommends that people avoid camp fires but if people still do it, he says be mindful and make sure someone is there to watch it.

Expect mostly sunny skies for Monday with highs in the 70s. There will be a breeze out of the west around 5-15 mph. Monday night will be partly cloudy with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

We’ll have a good amount of sun on Tuesday, and it will be a warm and breezy day with highs around 80 degrees.
