A man driving a motorcycle in a Tuesday morning crash on Interstate 91 in West Springfield is dead, Massachusetts State Police confirmed. It was one of three crashes in the area on Tuesday morning.
The man has so far been identified as a 24-year-old from Chicopee, state police said.
State police and other emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash at around 6:25 a.m. at Exit 10. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation tweeted that two left lanes on the northbound side were shut down and told commuters to expect delays. This left a buildup of traffic as far as just before the Chicopee Curve, WWLP reported.
In the same area just after 7 a.m., two separate multi-vehicle crashes involving five vehicles occurred, state police said. Three people were taken to Bay State Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.
The cause of the fatal crash is under investigation by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Detective Unit for Hampden County.
On Monday near Exit 8, a multi-car crash left a woman trapped inside her vehicle, prompting state troopers to use their cruiser to stabilize the vehicle so she could get out. The woman, a 29-year-old from Westfield, was taken to Bay State Medical Center with injuries deemed not life-threatening.
