I-Team: The cost of keeping homeless families in hotels

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 22News Investigative Team is continuing to follow the rise in homeless families being housed in local hotels by the state.

The state cleared out all of the families living in hotels nearly seven years ago. But then the pandemic hit and hotels were used once again citing “public health.”

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency measures, an eviction moratorium was put in place barring evictions. Those protections have expired creating a new housing crisis, increasing the need for even more shelter. The state says hotel rooms are the best option because there is a lack of emergency housing.

The 22News I-Team finds out how much the state is paying for hotel housing and if there’s any plan for reducing the number of people being housed in hotels.
