Massachusetts State Police have identified the young Springfield woman killed on Interstate 91 on May 7, after she was thrown from her car and run over by multiple oncoming vehicles.
Jemyliana Vargas, a 21-year-old woman from Springfield, was identified on Thursday by state police as the woman killed in the early morning, multi-vehicle crash. Vargas was the passenger in one of the cars, police said.
At around 2:55 a.m. on May 7, police responded for a serious crash to the northbound side of I-91, just over the Enfield, Connecticut border in Longmeadow.
Upon arrival, officers found a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit that had rolled on the highway, police said. The car had hit the rear of a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck, causing it to flip across the road.
Vargas was ejected from the Volkswagen as the car rolled, and the 21-year-old landed on the highway, police said. The woman was then hit by at least one other oncoming vehicle officials believe was a Nissan Infiniti, police said.
The driver of the Infiniti fled the scene on foot, and police said the department has still not located that person. It is unclear at this time whether there have been any charges in this case, police said.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 29-year-old Springfield man, was seriously injured in the crash and taken to Baystate Medical Center by the Agawam Fire Department, police said. The four occupants inside the pickup truck, which came to a stop at a guardrail on the highway, were also taken to the hospital, police said.
Services for Vargas were held on Tuesday, May 16, at the Henderson Funeral Home in Springfield, according to a Facebook post by a family member. The family had asked everyone who attended to wear yellow, her favorite color, the post said.
