Massachusetts State Police have not yet located the driver of a Nissan Infiniti, which police said hit a woman on Interstate 91 after she was thrown from a car in a multi-vehicle crash earlier this month.
Jemyliana Vargas, a 21-year-old woman from Springfield, was killed in the multi-vehicle crash on I-91 in Longmeadow just over the Enfield, Connecticut border on May 7, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Vargas was the passenger of a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit heading north on I-91 that hit the rear of a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck, according to the police investigation. The collision caused the Volkswagen to roll over and throw Vargas from the vehicle onto the highway.
Police said Vargas was at least hit by one other vehicle, a Nissan Infiniti, after she rolled onto the highway. The driver of the Infiniti ran away from the crash on foot, according to officials.
As of Thursday, May 25, authorities have not found the driver of the Infiniti, which they believe hit Vargas.
The driver of the Volkswagen, a 29-year-old Springfield man, was seriously injured in the crash and taken to Baystate Medical Center by the Agawam Fire Department, police said. The four occupants inside the pickup truck, which came to a stop at a guardrail on the highway, were also taken to the hospital, police said.
Vargas was remembered as a “devoted” mother of three children who was “full of life,” according to her obituary. Her family and loved ones held her services at the Henderson Funeral Home in Springfield on May 16.
