BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — Bristol police said Friday that they found the car of a 76-year-old man who was reported missing earlier this week with a dead body inside.
Alan Mello was last heard from on May 13 by his family. He was reported missing on May 22.
Police didn’t immediately identify the body that was found in the driver’s seat in Bristol.
Maj. Brian Burke said while investigating, they learned that Mello traveled to Norton, Massachusetts, to visit a friend before he was reporting missing.
Burke said they started tracing the route they believe Mello could have travelled from Norton back to Bristol.
Police said they found the 76-year-old’s red Toyota off the roadway between “extremely dense overgrowth and brush.”
Burke said there were no skid marks or debris that could have indicated that the car went off the roadway.
Police said the Medical Examiners is working on determining the person’s cause of death and their identity.
Burke said at this time, no foul play has been suspected.
