Three dead in fiery Chicopee car crash


Three people are dead following a fiery, early morning car crash on Route 391 in Chicopee.

The Massachusetts State Police said troopers attached to the Springfield Barracks responded to a 3:40 a.m. report of a car fire near Mile Marker 2.4 in the northbound lanes of the highway and found the fully involved vehicle with three people inside.

Troopers were able to extract the driver, a 24-year-old Springfield man, and he was taken to the Baystate Medical Center by ambulance. He later died of his injuries.

The two passengers in the car, a 23-year-old Springfield woman and a 25-year-old Holyoke man, were trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene of the crash.

The right and center lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as members of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crimes Scene Services and detectives attached to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office investigated the incident.

The highway was fully reopened at about 7:30 a.m.

The identities of those killed in the crash as being withheld by the District Attorney’s Office.
