John Armata Obituary (1937 – 2023) – Legacy Remembers

John Edward Armata, 85, of Bloomfield, Connecticut passed away suddenly on Monday, June 5, 2023. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on September 3, 1937, “Jack” as he was known, was the youngest child of the late Frank and Mary Armata.

Active until the moment he passed, Jack was known as one of the original owners of Armata’s Supermarkets which covered areas of Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. Alongside his brothers, Jack helped grow a corner store in Holyoke, MA started by his father into a group of businesses in several industries. Appreciative to the many people who worked alongside him for his lifetime in business, Jack’s strong work ethic was based on the premise “if I ask someone to do something, I have to be willing to do it myself.” This often saw him return home at night with torn or stained business suits, but he would have preferred it no other way.

His personal side focused on three simple things, his faith, his family, and friends. For more than fifteen years, he was a daily communicant at St. Timothy Church in West Hartford, CT. He spent his free time spent driving the roads playing easy listening music, having lunch, coffee, or long phone calls with family and friends, remembering the name of almost everyone he met, and closely participating on the lives of his children and grandchildren who meant everything to him.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Barbara Taft Armata, his son Matthew J. Armata of Farmington, CT, daughter Megan T. Armata of Hopkinton, MA, son Andrew M.T. Armata (Rayissa) of Munich Germany, as well as his three beloved grandchildren Clarissa, Hutton, and Sienna. Additionally, he is survived by his sisters Helen Harrington of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA and Elanor Valencia of Easthampton, MA. Jack was predeceased by his infant son Michael, sister Frances Fitzgerald, and his brothers Theodore and Frank Armata.

Visiting hours will be at The Church of Saint Timothy in West Hartford, CT on Sunday June 11 from 4 to 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday 12 June at 11am also at The Church of Saint Timothy (1116 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on Jack’s behalf to the school that helped educate his grandchildren St. Mary’s School in Simsbury, CT at 946 Hopmeadow Street Simsbury, CT 06070. Online expressions of sympathy may be made at www.molloyfuneralhome.com
