Longmeadow fire may have burned for hours before 911 call

LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – There is new information about a large fire in Longmeadow on Saturday night.

The Longmeadow Fire Department says that while they initially got to the house located at 1446 Longmeadow Street around 10:15 p.m. they believe people may have been seeing and smelling smoke as early as 7:15 p.m. No one was in the house at the time of the fire.

When crews entered the home, they heard an explosion in the basement, which was believed to be the boiler, that amplified the fire. The explosion blew the doors off the bulkhead access in the basement.

The cold temperatures made putting out the fire more challenging as hose lines and air packs were freezing and the entire area was covered in ice. The Longmeadow DPW sanded and salted the area, as well as blocked off roads.

No firefighters were injured, but the house was severely damaged. The initial cause of the fire is under investigation but not considered suspicious at this point. Longmeadow Fire Investigators and State Troopers assigned to the State Fire Marshall’s office will be investigating the cause.

The Longmeadow Fire Department is asking people to call 911 if they see any smoke that seems out of the ordinary. They said they’d rather come and out and find nothing than have a house burn for such a long time.
