Experts share tips to prep your snow blower for smooth operation

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Many people will be heading outside with their snow blowers to clear the snow on Tuesday.

Experts shared with 22News what you should do to make sure that your snow blower is in good working order. First thing first, you’re going to want to dust off that snow blower, start it up, and then let it run for a while, and check if you need any gas or oil.

If you try to start your snow blower after it’s been sitting for a while, it might not start. So before the first flake hits the ground, service it to help ensure it starts and operates properly. Dave Fogg of West Springfield told 22News, “Every time you go to start that engine, check your oil first. That’s the first thing I do every time top off the gasoline make sure the tires are inflated and change the oil at regular intervals.”

You should also check your snow blower skid shoes and shave plate for excessive wear, and visually inspect your equipment for any damage like loose bolts and screws

Having a snow blower could save you time and back pain, but it won’t be worth anything without the proper preparation. Before using it to clear the snow out, clean any built-up ice, dust, or dirt, but never clean it while it’s running.

Nicholas Burbank at Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam says it’s also a good idea to
stock up on supplies like ice melt, “Stock up on some ice melt. If you want to prevent ice from building up you want your shovels. You want to shovel out all of the areas your snow blower can’t reach if you don’t have a snow blower to clean out your driveway and sidewalk.”

And for those who have pets or young children, there are plenty of safe ice melt options that
are just as effective. By taking a little time to inspect your snow blower now and perform a few basic maintenance tasks, you won’t be left out in the cold with no help.
