Braves Signing Ex-Red Sox Catcher, Champion To Minor League Deal

One former member of the Boston Red Sox seems to have found a new home.

Former Red Sox catcher Sandy León had been looking for his next opportunity and seems to have found it as he reportedly signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ Mark Polishuk.

“The Braves have signed catcher Sandy León and right-hander Jackson Stephens to minor league contracts, as per the MLB.com bio pages for both players,” Polishuk said. “For Stephens, he returns to the organization after rejecting an outright assignment in favor of free agency earlier this week.

“León’s addition seems like a pure depth move for the Braves with Sean Murphy on the 10-day injured list.  Since there usually isn’t a set timeline for oblique injuries, it isn’t yet known when Murphy might be back in action, so signing León gives Atlanta a bit more flexibility at Triple-A Gwinnett.”

The veteran backstop bounced around the big leagues and minor leagues last season. He appeared in 21 games with the Texas Rangers at the big league level and also spent time in the minors in the Texas organization as well as the Cleveland Guardians organization.

León joined the Red Sox ahead of the 2015 campaign and spent five seasons with the club. He was an important piece of the Boston organization and played a major role for the historic 2018 World Series-winning club.

Hopefully, he can impress in the minors and make his way back up to the big leagues.
