Woman killed in West Springfield homicide: 37-year-old man arrested

WEST SPRINGFIELD — Police arrested a 37-year-old man on murder charges hours after a woman was shot to death in a parking lot on Riverdale Street Wednesday.

Roman Holguin, of Springfield, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Springfield District on murder charges, said James Leydon, spokesman for Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni.

Police responded to reports of a disturbance at 10:48 a.m. near 500 Riverdale St. When they arrived, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound, he said.

She was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, in Springfield, where she died. Her name has not been released pending notification of her family, he said.

The homicide is being investigated by the West Springfield Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit, he said.
