Bernard F. Hamel
1933 – 2024
Holyoke artist, Bernard F. Hamel passed away on February 27, 2024 at the age of 90. Bernie was born in Holyoke to the late George and Mary (Fadden) Hamel. He attended Holyoke Schools and was a graduate of St. Jerome High School, as well as Pratt Institute and The Art Students League in New York City. He is predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Joan E. (Stefanik). Together they owned and operated the Fine Art Studio and Frame Shop in Holyoke. Bernard was a talented artist whose work can be seen in many office buildings in Holyoke. His best known work was that of the lead carousel horse, Lancelot, which is on display at the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round. He also created a coloring book for the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round. His painting Erik’s Wall received several awards including the CT Artist’s association, Wadsworth Atheneum and the George Bellow’s award, National Art Club, NYC. Bernard was a Veteran of The United States Air Force. He served from 1956 to 1960 and completed an overseas tour stationed in Newfoundland. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George, J. Francis, James, and Edward, and sisters, Dawn Miller and Mary Baush; two step-daughters, Donna and Linda. He is survived by his sister, June Powell of Holyoke, and many nieces and nephews. Private Services were held.
