SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – In Southwick, the 43rd Motor Cross Championships were held over at the Wick 388 on Saturday.
The Southwick National started on Saturday morning with great weather and a great turnout from the community
Round five of the Pro Motor Cross Championship of the 2024 season includes two groups, the 250 Class and the 450 Class.
We caught up with Brandon Short, the Motor Cross Championship media manager, about the history of the event.
“This is one of our more key events,” he said. “We have been coming to western Massachusetts since 1976.”
The race’s deep-rooted history in Southwick has allowed the community to show great support for the events.
“This event, we are in the middle of Southwick, we are in the town, we are immersed, everything around us, in the neighborhoods, the schools, everybody behind us.”
Short said this is their longest running and most prestigious Motor Cross Championship in America, and the event has grown immensely over the years.
“It’s seemingly growing every year, it doesn’t seem like it can get bigger than it is, but it seems to somehow get more, we get more people here, a bigger fan base.”
The motor cross community has grown from domestically to now attracting international competition.
“We have a ton of international riders at this event because the appeal of the sand track makes it something that is unique and appealing to bring guys from overseas to come here and give it their shot against America’s best,” Short explained.
With international riders, come fans from all around the world.
The motor cross community continues to grow, and Southwick can continue to expect big turnouts for future motor cross events.
