John W. Hammon, 89, of the Willimansett section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Independence Day, Thursday, July 4, 2024. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Sempronius, New York on January 6, 1935, a beloved son of the late Otto J. and Florence E. (Bigsby) Hammon. He was raised in Homer, New York, graduated from Homer Central High School and lived there for many years before moving to Chicopee in 1955. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was discharged from Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee. Following his military service, he was employed as a Mail Handler for the United States Postal Bulk Mail Center in Springfield. During his younger years, John was a youth Basketball Coach for (AJAC) Aldenville Junior Athletic Club. He enjoyed golfing, watching NASCAR racing, was a huge Red Sox and Celtics fan and he especially enjoyed summer camping in Monson. He was a member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337 and was a communicant of the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett. Following the closing of his church, he became a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his many friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and soul mate, Joan A. (Landry) Hammon who was Called Home on May 22, 2014. There were married on July 11, 1959 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. He leaves his four loving children, Robbin M. Smith and her husband, Dean, of Springville, TN, Mark J. Hammon and his wife, Holly, of Chicopee, Wayne R. Hammon and his former wife, Ann Marie, of Westfield, and Scott A. Hammon and his wife, Heather, of Chicopee; his nine cherished grandchildren, Justin Bailey, Preston Bailey and his wife, Etta, Cody Hammon and his fiancée, Taite, Jared Hammon and his partner, Aanika, Hunter Davis, Connor Davis, Jordan Benoit, Austin Hammon, Charisma Hammon and her partner, Owen, Makayla Hammon and Devin Hammon; his two cherished great-grandchildren, Emery Bailey and Vincent Hammon; his two dear sisters, Louise Withey of Homer, NY and Ann Witherall of Navasota, TX; his dear sister-in-law, Diane Bolstridge of Chicopee, his dear brother-in-law, Ronald Landry and his wife, Kathy, of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended family members. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his dear brother, Otto J. Hammon, Jr.; and his dear sister, Nancy Bowman. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 594 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Inurnment with his late wife, Joan will be private for his family at a later date with United States Air Force Military Honors at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
