Bessie Nicodemus Obituary (1944 – 2024) – Holyoke, MA – The Republican

Bessie Nicodemus
1944 – 2024
Bessie Nicodemus, 80, passed away on July 2, 2024 following a brief illness. She was born and raised in Denville, New Jersey by the late Robert and Dorothy Cummins. Volunteering as a Candy Striper (nurse’s assistant) as a teenager convinced her to follow her mother’s career path into nursing, so following graduation from Morris Plains Regional High School in 1962, she joined the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of medical corpsman. While stationed in Boston at Chelsea Naval Hospital she met the love of her life, fellow Navy veteran Harry Nicodemus, and after completing her naval enlistment she moved to Chicopee, where they married in 1970. They were happily married for 52 years, until Harry’s death in 2023. Bessie worked at Mount Holyoke College for over 30 years as a custodian and custodial supervisor. She loved to read, knit, and crochet- over the years all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are grateful to have received at least one blanket or sweater crafted with her love and care. She gave her whole heart to her family and friends, and her wit, knowledge, and heart will be greatly missed by everyone that had the privilege to know her. Bessie is predeceased by her husband Harry Nicodemus. She leaves her children Tina Nicodemus, Lori Germain and Sean Carrell, Kari Champagne and Alan Champagne, Rachel Nicodemus and Mark Salvi; her grandchildren Michael Germain Jr., Emily Germain, Caitlin Lamparelli, Joseph Trombley, Morgan Trombley, Rosanna Aiello, Christina Douglass, Stephanie Douglass, and great grandsons Gray Cruz and Caleb Lamparelli. She also leaves her brother John Cummins and sister in law Suzanne Cummins, in-laws Sandra and Donald Wilkins, Charlene and Mark Schmitter, and David Nicodemus, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Thursday July 18th at O’Brien Family Funeral Home in South Hadley from 10:30am to 12:30pm, followed by a service at the funeral home and burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Agawam. Bessie’s family would like to thank the nursing staff at Day Brook Village and Spectrum Hospice for the comfort and care given to Bessie and her family. Memorial donations may be made to Spectrum VNA and Hospice. For more information or to make online condolences please go to
