David L. Bernard Jr., passed away on July 3 at Holyoke Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Springfield to Phyllis (Fowler) and David L Bernard Sr. on May 16, 1943 and resided in Ludlow after graduating from Ludlow High School in 1961. After graduation he joined the US Air Force as an air traffic controller. On completion of his military service he continued working as an air traffic controller for the FAA. He also participated in a special assignment in China Lake, California for a period of time. He resided in California for many years thereafter and became employed by GE Americom and later SES Americom as a satellite controller until 2009 when he retired from the New Jersey facility. He was an avid hunter and woodworker in addition to loving the outdoors, thus doing a lot of skiing, hiking and touring of our national parks. But his number one love was flying his airplane ( A Mooney) whenever he could. He was predeceased by brothers James and Richard Bernard and his very best buddy and brother-in-law Charles Loud. He leaves behind his wife of 27 years, Pat (Appicelli), 2 sons David DeMay (Heidi) and David L. Bernard III (Jane), his daughter Jennifer DeMay, sister BJ Ferrero and Betty Ann Loud, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for David will be held on Monday, July 15, 2024 from the Ludlow Funeral Home. Visitation is from 9:30 AM to 11 AM Monday morning with a Celebration of Life Service at the funeral home beginning at 11 AM, burial with Air Force Military Honors will take place in Reservoir Cemetery following the chapel service.
