Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14s Win Western Mass Title

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Brendan Merwin threw five innings on the mound and went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate Monday to lead the Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-and-under All-Stars to an 8-3 win over Westfield and a Western Massachusetts State Championship.


Pittsfield swept the best two-out-three series, 2-0, to carry the Western Mass banner into the New England Regional Championships, scheduled for next week in Newtown, Conn.


On Tuesday, Merwin scattered five hits and allowed one run before giving the ball to Sebastien Herrera, who struck out five over the last two innings.


Jason Fields went 2-for-3, and Mario Zerbato doubled in a seven-hit attack for the home team.


Pittsfield won the first game of the championship series, 10-7, in Westfield on Saturday.
