Chicopee man charged with Murder in Arcade St. shooting, victim identified | News
CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) — An arrest has been made in connection with a murder on Arcade Street in Chicopee on Saturday.
Nicholas Moriarty, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder and he was arraigned at Chicopee District Court on Tuesday morning.
According to these court documents, a woman called police just before 5:00 p.m. Saturday, claiming her son had just shot her boyfriend, 53-year-old John Martin.
The police report that we obtained includes the woman’s claim that there was a confrontation. The son, Moriarty, punched the boyfriend, Martin, several times in the head and “Mr. Martin said after the altercation, he claimed that he was going to kick Mr. Moriarty out of the house and that he could no longer live there.”
The suspect then went upstairs and came back with a gun. Police said in the report, “he fired a number of shots at Mr. Martin who was standing in the bathroom. Nicholas then went outside the house armed with two guns.”
That’s where officers said they found the suspect with a gun to his head. They were then successfully able to get him to drop his weapon and arrest him.
Neighbors that we spoke with told Western Mass News that it was a crazed scene. They described hearing the gunshots and a number of police cars swarm to the area.
Moriarty is currently being held at the Hampden County Jail in Ludlow until his pretrial hearing, which is scheduled to take place on February 18.
