Severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of Massachusetts

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Massachusetts Wednesday. A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued by the National Weather Service for Massachusetts and New England on Wednesday evening. The weather service says that wind gusts are the primary threat. A severe storm was working its way east across the state Wednesday afternoon bringing high wind gusts and downpours. The thunderstorm is expected to affect not only the Bay State but Connecticut, New Jersey, New York Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Central Berkshire County until around 4:15 p.m.“A couple of thunderstorms are beginning to make their way into Western Massachusetts. Expect thunderstorms to expand in coverage as the afternoon to evening progresses,” the weather service reports. The weather service clarified a common misunderstanding between a “watch” and a “warning.” A watch means that the ingredients for storms are in place and storms are possible in the near future. A warning means that a severe thunderstorm storm is happening or imminent. Meteorologists are issuing a watch and add that the severe weather is partly due to the heatwave in southern New England as it stretches into its third day.
