With just a few days remaining until Opening Day, Montgomery’s market “has finally hit, and it’s getting competitive,” according to MLB Network Radio’s Jim Bowden.
Montgomery, a playoff standout and World Series winner with the Rangers last season, has thrown at least 180 innings (postseason included) in each of the past two years. With many teams experiencing injuries to their starting rotation, the 31-year-old left-hander’s reliability may be especially coveted right now.
The Yankees took a major hit to their starting rotation with ace Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury, which is expected to sideline the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner for the first month of the regular season. With other starters having been injury-prone recently, namely left-handers Carlos Rodón and Nestor Cortes, New York’s rotation depth is in a precarious position.
Montgomery was drafted by the Yankees in 2014, and he pitched for them from 2017-22. He has also pitched for the Cardinals and the Rangers, helping Texas win its first World Series title last fall.
