Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Ludlow plans to expand its bed capacity

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – A hospital bed expansion has been approved at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of western Massachusetts, including 17 new private rooms to treat patients needing hospital-level rehab.

Upon completion, the hospital will have 70 private rooms at 222 State Street in Ludlow.

“Since opening in 1996, Encompass Health of Western Massachusetts has helped more than 31,000 patients gain greater confidence and independence to return to what matters most. Our hospital has served as a pillar in the care continuum for those who need rehabilitation after a serious illness and injury, and this expansion will allow us to enhance the patient experience and meet the needs of more individuals,” said John R. Hunt, CEO of Encompass Health of Western Massachusetts. “We are honored that so many patients choose our hospital for their rehabilitation needs, and we look forward to continuing to serve individuals in the Ludlow community and beyond for many years to come.”

The hospital recently added hemodialysis services, which are provided by highly skilled and dedicated staff. With this new service, the hospital can provide more specialized care to more dialysis patients, improving efficiency and clinical outcomes and maximizing patient recovery.

In addition to strokes, amputations, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Western Massachusetts serves patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries.

A multidisciplinary rehab team includes doctors, nurses, case managers, dieticians, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, who combine the latest technology with individualized treatment plans. Every five days, patients get at least three hours of therapy.

Construction is expected to start late summer and be finished in spring 2025, and the hospital will remain fully functional.
